Louisiana immigrants who arrived to this state without proper paperwork in order undoubtedly understand what it is like to live life, looking over a shoulder. If a police officer or other member of authority approaches, it may cause stress levels to soar, thinking an arrest may be imminent. Sometimes, immigration detention issues intersect with criminal charges.
Such is the case for a 52-year-old man in another state. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say they are familiar with the man because he has been deported multiple times in the past. He had been living and working in the U.S., however, until the day a SWAT team moved in on him at a local hotel and placed him under arrest on suspicion of murder. The man he is believed to have killed was a co-worker of his and was shot while riding a tractor.
The two men reportedly had a long-standing feud between them. This may have something to do with local authorities’ suspicion that the immigrant in question had something to do with the other man’s death. ICE says that not only is the man undocumented, he was convicted on aggravated felony re-entry to the United States after deportation.
Such issues will no doubt exacerbate the man’s current situation. He now faces criminal charges for murder and unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. It is unlikely he will be released from county jail any time soon, as his bail has been set at $5,000,000. Most Louisiana residents who have faced similar situations in the past have immediately sought immigration detention and criminal defense support by meeting with attorneys who have experience in these areas.
